Maintaining Relevance through Credibility and Continuous Advances
The International Convention of Forensic Medicine & Sciences 2024 is jointly organised by the Department of Forensic Medicine, Queen Elizabeth Hospital (HQE) and the Malaysian Society of Forensic Medicine and Science (MaSForMS).
The Scientific Committee has created a relevant and constructive scientific programme for this International Convention of Forensic Medicine & Sciences 2024. The convention's theme is ‘Maintaining Relevance through Credibility and Continuous Advances’, and it will be held from 3rd through 5th July 2024 at Marriot Hotel, Kota Kinabalu.
Who is attending?
180 delegates nationwide and from South East Asian countries are expected to attend this convention. Several distinguished international and local experts in forensic pathology, forensic odontology, forensic sciences and cardiac pathology also expected to speak and share their experiences.
Speakers
Emeritus Professor Roger Byard, a distinguished forensic pathologist, has made significant contributions to medical science, particularly in sudden infant and childhood death research. Holding the Marks Chair of Pathology at The University of Adelaide until 2023, he's now a Senior Specialist at Forensic Science SA. Recognized globally, he's received numerous awards, including the Australian Public Service Medal and Officer of the Order of Australia. With over 1,000 publications, he's a top-rated expert in forensic sciences and a respected educator, having delivered lectures worldwide. His humanitarian efforts include disaster victim identification and human rights investigations.
Professor Sheppard leads the CRY Cardiovascular Pathology Unit at St George’s Medical School, UK, and chairs a national center for investigating young cardiac deaths. A University College Cork alumna, she's published extensively in cardiac pathology and contributed to international guidelines. She collaborates on familial cardiac issues and runs a global training program. Her leadership roles include the European Association of Cardiovascular Pathology and various guideline panels. Recognized for her research and mentorship, she's received multiple honors, including the Stokes Medal and honorary titles from universities and professional societies.
Prof Richard Bassed is a leading figure in forensic medicine at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine and Monash University. His expertise lies in oral and maxillofacial pathology, and he oversees forensic medicine education. His research spans post-mortem CT analysis, personal identification through imaging, and enhancing forensic science with AI. Additionally, he collaborates with the UN on investigating unlawful killings globally, emphasizing the importance of robust death investigation systems.
Dr. Lee Chin Thye is a Senior Consultant Forensic Pathologist at the Health Sciences Authority, Singapore, with expertise in forensic medicine since 2007. He directs operations at the Forensic Medicine Division, ensuring efficient mortuary processes and overseeing advanced forensic programs. Dr. Lee's career includes significant roles in professional development, education, and international forensic standards. His contributions to forensic pathology education and disaster victim identification have earned him prestigious awards and recognition for his impact on managing COVID-19.
Dr. Alfredo E Walker is a renowned forensic pathologist in Ontario, Canada, with a distinguished career that includes a consultancy with the UK's Forensic Science Service and a role as a Consultant Home Office Pathologist. A University of the West Indies graduate, he's contributed significantly to forensic pathology in the Caribbean, founding professional societies and fostering education. His accolades include the Hummingbird Medal Gold and recognition for his service and mentorship in forensic pathology. He's also co-chaired an audit team for the State of Maryland, USA, and is an active academic author and speaker.
Dr. Mohd Suhani, a University of Malaya alumnus, is a Senior Consultant Forensic Pathologist in Malaysia. He specialized in forensic histopathology and heads the Department of Forensic Medicine at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital. In 2008, he founded Malaysia's first forensic histopathology lab. His work focuses on trauma and sudden death, contributing significantly to forensic education and societies. He's also recognized for his editorial role in a Malaysian forensic journal.
Dr. Norhayati binti Jaffar, a University of Malaya graduate, is a forensic odontologist with a postgraduate degree from the University of Melbourne. She's been involved in high-profile cases like the Sosilawati murder and Kim Jong Nam's death. Her expertise in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) includes operations for MH17 and the Elmina plane crash, showcasing her significant role in forensic investigations in Malaysia.
Dr. Chandroth Navin is a forensic expert with a comprehensive educational background, including a law degree and multiple diplomas in forensic sciences. He's experienced in disaster management, notably with MH17's DVI team. Currently, he's enhancing his skills in forensic anthropology in Scotland and actively contributes to the Malaysian Society of Forensic Medicine & Sciences as its Secretary.
Mr. Ismadi Bin Ismail, a Forensic Science graduate from the University of Science Malaysia, has been a Forensic Science Officer since 2006. Currently leading the Forensic Histopathology Laboratory at Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital, he's recognized for his expertise in forensic histopathology, contributing to various workshops and courses. His commitment to forensic science education and practice has earned him multiple Excellent Service Awards and international training experience in Melbourne, Australia.
